About

“Get into golf” – it is an enjoyable sport however its benefits go much further, because it adds significant value to healthy living. Especially for “seniors” golf brings a healthy dimension contributing to physical and mental health for gentlemen and ladies.

A game of golf can last from 1 hour till 5 depending on the number of holes played. While the goal is to play 18-holes  lasting approximately 4-5 hours, there are a large number of “recreational” golfers around the world who enjoy a game which can be tailored to suit their time and skill.

A study done in scandinavia several years ago determined that the life span of a person playing golf on average is 5 years longer than a non-golfer and this is in both gentlemen and ladies. Walking a golf course – ideally – means you walk between 4-6 kilometers. And in sri Lanka that is walking through verdant green nature breathing is refreshing air and in tropical climate conditions.

Bobby Jones one of worlds greatest golfers in his time is quoted to saying ‘golf is played on a 5-inch course – the distance between your ears”. A very profound statement and so true because the golfer who performs well on the golf course is the one who has a positive, focused, confident mind.

When on the golf course, mobile phone calls are taboo resulting is a serene time window of mental relaxation. While golf is considered a ‘low-impact” sport, playing uses many muscles in the upper and lower body in a gentle sequence. Playing with partners adds enjoyment and camaraderie to the moment and the unique golf handicap system ensures everyone despite having different abilities play on a level playing field. Ultimately in a game of golf you play against yourself striving to do better. This results in focused mental exercise.

Golf is also a game where you are your own umpire. This teaches etiquette, self-discipline and integrity which enhances life beyond the golf course.

I am Tony Maheswaran and while I am passionate about golf I am very far from what I would consider being an accomplished golfer. And this makes it more interesting for me because regular practice in an effort to get better means more physical and mental exercise which adds value to life.

Golf is certainly a great way to enjoy life with health benefits especially for “senior” ladies and gentlemen. It also gives great opportunities for travel through golf, explore different places, meet new faces and experience iconic events through golf around the world.

So if your aim is to enjoy a healthy life, golf is one avenue to consider because of proven health benefits.
